A Walk Along the Sidelines
Frames from the Field #2: Small scenes from a place that feels more like home each day.
“I’ve been a fan of anime and Japanese pop culture for as long as I can remember—probably since early primary school. That early fascination sparked a dream of living in Japan someday.
In 2018, I finally visited Japan for the first time. It was just a holiday, but I instantly fell in love with the country and felt like I could truly belong here.
Now, I’ve been living in Japan for three years and am currently waiting for my permanent residency to be approved so I can stay even longer.”
These were the thoughts running through my mind as I walked along the sidelines of the baseball field in Tamagawa River, with a camera in hand.
Unlike in Indonesia, baseball is hugely popular in Japan. You’ll find baseball fields in many neighborhoods, and people genuinely enjoy playing and watching the game. As I walked by, I saw people laughing, chatting, and having fun. From the sidelines, I quietly observed and took a few photos—grateful for the life I get to live.
That moment made me reflect: my childhood belief that I could fit in here turned out to be true. I haven’t faced the same struggles that some of my Indonesian friends have shared. Somehow, life here feels natural to me.
The last time I went back to Indonesia, I stayed for almost a month—and I genuinely enjoyed it. It was great to see family, catch up with friends, and of course, eat all the food I missed.
But strangely, I found myself wanting to return to Japan sooner than expected. Not because I dislike Indonesia—far from it, I love my home country (though I have my issues aka hate with the government, lol). Maybe it’s just that Japan feels more like home to me now?
